Location

Facts to Know

Busan
  • Haeundae was originally called 'Oeundae': The name of Haeundae, Busan's symbol, originates from a monk named 'Haeun'. He practiced asceticism on this beautiful beach, and locals who saw clouds following him rising from the sea called it 'Oeundae (Lonely Cloud Peak)' in his honor. This later changed phonetically to 'Haeundae'.
  • It's home to the 'World's Largest Liquor Retailer,' not just a department store: While the Shinsegae Department Store Centum City branch is in the Guinness Book as the 'World's Largest Department Store,' a record Busanites are prouder of is held by a fish restaurant in Jagalchi Market for the 'Most Soju Sold by a Single Store.' It hints at Busan's unique 'Somaek (soju + beer)' drinking culture.

Shanghai
  • Literally a 'City on the Sea': The name Shanghai (上海) literally means 'upon the sea.' This reflects the geographical fact that the area was originally part of the Yangtze River Delta's alluvial plain, which historically 'rose up' above the sea due to sedimentation and sea level changes.
  • One of the World's Fastest-Sinking Major Cities: Shanghai suffers from severe land subsidence due to its soft soil, the weight of its countless skyscrapers, and excessive groundwater extraction. It sank about 2.8 meters during the 20th century, one of the fastest rates in the world. Even its iconic Oriental Pearl Tower is known to have tilted by approximately 2 cm in the decades since its completion.

Jeju
  • Unique Matrifocal Culture, the Island of the 'Haenyeo': Jeju's Haenyeo (female diver) culture is a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. What's remarkable is its matrifocal social characteristic, where women were traditionally the main pillars of the household and primary economic providers. The haenyeo use a unique breathing technique called 'Sumbisori,' a whistling sound that also serves as their means of communication.
  • The Secret Behind the 'Stone'-Dominated Landscape: The stone walls, Dol Hareubang (grandfather statues), and the 'Jeongnang' (stone poles) found throughout Jeju are not just scenery. As a volcanic island, farmers had to clear stones from fields to farm, piling them into walls and creating this unique stone culture. The 'Jeongnang' served as both a threshold dividing space and a shamanistic barrier believed to block evil spirits.

Sasebo
  • Japan's Most American City: Sasebo is home to a major Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force base and a permanent US Navy facility. This has led to a deep-rooted American influence throughout the city. Its famous 'Sasebo Burger' is a prime example, evolving from hot dogs served to US sailors in the 1950s into a unique street food culture featuring Japanese-style buns and sauces.
  • From Massive Warships to a European Village: Sasebo Port is one of Japan's largest naval facilities, where you can occasionally spot some of the world's biggest warships (e.g., the JMSDF's helicopter carriers). In contrast, on the city's outskirts lies 'Huis Ten Bosch,' a Dutch theme park recreating a European landscape with windmills and canals. This extreme contrast is part of Sasebo's unique charm.
